This book is part of a National
Kangaroo Campaign Project and was produced by the Australian
Wildlife Protection Council. Fully illustrated with beautiful
and tragic photographs of kangaroos, it explains the complex
issues surrounding the largest wildlife slaughter in the world.
It unveils the ugly propaganda proffered by Australian Federal
and State governments and supplies easy to read facts and views
from a wide range of reputable contributors.
With the Sydney Olympic Games 2000
upon us we are on the world stage - 'hardly a time to be slaughtering
our national symbol and serving it as a patriotic gourmet delight
or pushing kangaroo products. Outrage is the reaction
and, in fact, in France a documentary depicting the outback
slaughter is to be shown on public Channel 2 before the end
of the year. Paul McCartney and Brigitte Bardot have condemned
Australia's brutal treatment of kangaroos. Americans do
not want to eat our National Symbol.
THE KANGAROO
BETRAYED! is a signal of crisis, a challenge to the status
quo. The issue of 'culling' Skippy, the unique, friendly
and vulnerable kangaroo evokes and stirs strong emotions; but
it goes much deeper to demonstrate that seeing mobs of kangaroos
at sunset offers one of the greatest wildlife experiences on
earth and that Skippy is worth more ALIVE than he is dead to
the tourism industry.
Like it or not, this is an issue
that will not go away and this book forces us to confront, get
the facts and change the way we 'manage' our wildlife.
Much of the content of this website
is derived from the book.
"The
Kangaroo BETRAYED!"
Publication of this
book is timely, with the eyes of the world focused on Australia
in the year 2000 as we host the Olympic Games. What will the
world think when it comes to realise that the most readily recognised
symbol of Australia is routinely slaughtered and butchered?
Little wonder is it that the faunal emblems to be used are the
kookaburra, platypus and echidna and not the kangaroo. The Olympic
movement seems to want to shun any association with the betrayal
of our national emblem. Perhaps the world will similarly shun
Australia when it realises the truth of how the kangaroo has
been betrayed!
