The
Liberal Party's official 2004 policy calls for commercial
killing and processing of kangaroos in Victoria as they try
to gain acceptance for an industry which the CSIRO in 1982
found was unsustainable. Since that time further adequate
habitat has been stolen from the kangaroos and successive
Victorian Government Environmental Ministers have all agreed
that there are simply not enough kangaroos in the state to
sustain or support a commercial kill, but the Liberals ignore
these scientific facts.
The
Liberal Party is to be condemned for failing to protect kangaroos
and for not providing enough safe habitat in which they can
live their lives free from commercial exploitation and gun
happy shooters. The Liberal Party will win few friends with
such a retrogressive and oppressive policy which is outdated,
cruel and unnecessary in the 21st Century.
Where
the money raised from the kangaroo levy will be spent will
eb decided by the Kangaroo Industry after consulting with
itself. They expect to gain $200,000 annually to be used to
examine further killing and processing of our kangaroos; our
wildlife.
