OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF TOURISM

Dear Minister:

Congratulations on your perspicacity that the tourism industry needs a major shakeup with an integrated infrastructure, if it is to survive. The warning signal was given July 6, 2001 in the BRW 'TOURISM Australia's Neglected Industry' with the photo/feature of a bullet -ridden kangaroo.
The inside Cover Story again the bullet- ridden sign with a kangaroo 'No Fun In Tourism' and the subheading 'Fragmented, plagued by infighting and under-funded, tourism is in a mess' . There was widespread media coverage with John Morse saying " It's up to (the industry and society) to decide whether we …fly and create things for this country, or whether we fall off the cliff."

At the end of 1999 we launched 'The Kangaroo BETRAYED!' in the NSW Parliament. I call your attention to two Chapters by Dr David Croft UNSW School of Biological Science, 'Rangeland Kangaroos - A World-class Wildlife Experience'. Dr Croft asks 'Where is the promotion of a great wildlife experience in the vast wilderness of the Australian outback?' We have unique wildlife seen no where else in the world and what do we do? We shoot them and destroy their habitat

Broken Hillites met July 27th 2002 to find ways to keep the town from dying. Broken Hill could be described as the gateway to Australia. It is in desperate need of the infrastructure you talk about, to open up the 3/7 of Australia to Tourism and Retirism.. Dr John Auty, noted historian and retired bureaucrat who has worked for Sir Charles Court, and Doug Anthony, produced " Reanimating the Dead Heart' which calls for de-stocking, removal of weeds and feral animals and the development of infrastructure which would open the 'dead heart' to a thriving tourism, retirism industry to provide jobs, jobs jobs to a section of the country that has almost given up all hope. Any farmers who wish to do so could stay on as Rangers and Managers. All it takes is someone with vision and the will to make it happen. It is a new way to think, a new fork in the crossroad for tourism.

Sandra Nori's attack on you saying that you should provide more money for tourism 'marketing' is ill-advised What is there to market? More of the same??? Australia desperately needs infrastructure for the neglected 3/7 of Australia that is crying out for a new vision. Our National and International network supports Dr Croft and Dr Auty's vision for the future and we all hope that you will too.

Sincerely,

Maryland Wilson
