Save Ningaloo Reef - Stop The Resort

Save Ningaloo

If you are concerned about protecting the worlds remaining wilderness areas - please help stop a huge resort proposed for the extraordinary Ningaloo Reef on the isolated north west coast of Western Australia. Visit www.save-ningaloo.org for more information and send easy automated letters while you're there.

Ningaloo Reef is a magnificent, awe inspiring but fragile coral wilderness, a long day's drive north of Perth. Right now, however, the Government probably wishes that the Reef were much further away, preferably in another State altogether, because it is facing a gathering storm of public anger over a proposal to build a large marina from the 1980s near Coral Bay.

Many scientists, tourism operators and thousands of other citizens believe that phase one of the marina development, alone, would cause serious and irreparable damage.

The proposed site is of particular ecological importance because the large lagoon and break in the reef attract many species, including dugongs, whale sharks, dolphins and manta rays. Humpback whales also appear to favour the area as a nursery for their calves on their southerly migration.

Endangered turtle species, commercially hunted at Ningaloo only decades ago, are nesting in increasing numbers on the lagoon's beaches. The long list of animals there threatened with extinction helps explain why scientists around the world increasingly see Ningaloo as one of the most important coral ecosystems left.

Many West Australians believe that Ningaloo could be opened up to well managed eco-tourism, but that three storey hotels with palm trees, and a marina for hundreds of private power boats, with fish-freezing services - is not the way to go in this spectacular wilderness. Please help. Text courtesy of www.save-ningaloo.org

Below is an Email News Alert that is currently circulating. Please read it and do what you can to help the Ningaloo Reef and it's marine inhabitants.

Ningaloo Reef on a knife edge

Dear Friend of Ningaloo,

The future of Ningaloo Reef now hangs in the balance and we urgently need your help.

The WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has released its long-awaited environmental recommendations regarding the construction of a massive 1980s style marina resort at magnificent Ningaloo Reef.

This development would initially cater for thousands of people as well as hundreds of power boats in the heart of Ningaloo - one of the most pristine coral reefs in the world - which is home to thousands of marine plants and animals, many of them endangered.

Despite identifying grave environmental concerns regarding the development, the EPA failed to give a clear 'no' to the proposal, leaving the way open for governmental approval.

This political 'hot potato' has now been handed to the State Government for a final decision which is expected soon.

This is Ningaloo's most crucial moment.

We urgently need you to take action. Please make a donation to help save Ningaloo, and if you live in Western Australia come to the Rally for the Reef we have called for 1 December, 11am at Fremantle Esplanade. There are also other ways you can help.

Unfortunately the developers are well-connected and will do everything they can to squeeze through the gap in the door that the EPA has left open. The fate of Ningaloo now rests on a knife-edge - and with each of us.

Thank you for helping save Ningaloo.
